Hi there,
My friend sent me a link on WhatsApp last week. Just the link. No message or any other explanation so my spidey senses were instantly tingling.
I didn't click it. Working in tech has made me suspicious of random links even when they come from people I know. But most people wouldn't think twice because it came from someone they trust.
This exact thing can happen with your domain and email.
Email spoofing happens when someone sends messages that appear to come from you. Your domain name shows up as the sender. Recipients see an email from a business they recognize and don't question it.
Email spoofing is one of those security issues that sounds scarier than it actually is to fix, but is definitely worth understanding.
Basically, if your emails aren't properly authenticated, two problems happen:
Problem 1: Your legitimate emails get blocked or sent to spam because receiving servers can't verify they actually came from you.
Problem 2: It's easier for scammers to send fake emails that appear to come from your domain. Without proper authentication, there's no way for recipients to tell the difference between your real emails and fraudulent ones.
If you're already using WP Mail SMTP, you're in good shape. The plugin handles authenticated sending, which is the hard part. But it's worth checking that your DNS records are configured properly.
Three DNS records (SPF, DKIM, and DMARC) verify your emails are actually from you and tell receiving servers what to do with messages that fail authentication.
Without these configured, your legitimate emails struggle to reach people, and scammers can more easily send fake emails from your domain.
The email test feature in WP Mail SMTP will show you exactly what's set up and what's missing. We just published a guide that walks through checking your authentication records so you can be sure nobody is spoofing your domain.

Think of it like those passwords that are a huge string of random characters – a bit of a pain to set up initially, but it's effective to keep your account secure.
