WP Mail SMTP

Hey there,

I stayed at a hotel in December that was terrible. It was also very expensive, which is what you get when you book somewhere touristy the weekend before Christmas and don't have many options.

The room didn't have a towel. Or a bar of soap. Small things, except not when you're paying what we were paying. I didn't say anything at the time because I generally don’t like to complain, and then about a week later I got one of those how was your stay? emails in my inbox. Everything I'd been too polite to say in person ended up in a two-star review.

Sitting there typing it up, it occurred to me that if anyone had asked me while I was still in the building, they'd have had a chance to fix it. Instead they got a review they can't delete and I got no towel.

Which is more or less the whole reason I have a little three-button survey at the bottom of every one of these newsletters. Someone asked me last week whether it actually works, and thinking about the hotel is part of why I think it does.

The votes themselves are less interesting than you'd think. The split is roughly what you'd expect, week to week. What I actually read is the comment box. A handful of people type something in every time, and that's where I find out which analogies landed, what needs more explanation, what people are trying to do with their own sites, and every now and again that someone thinks I'm a spammer.

Occasionally, someone uses the comment box to suggest a topic. Which is how this email came to exist, actually.

If you want something like it for your own emails (whether it’s marketing emails, weekly newsletters, or the emails your WordPress site sends) I wrote up the full setup this week:

👉 How to add a feedback poll to your WordPress emails

Small bonus: clicks on the poll count as engagement in Gmail and other email provider’s eyes, which helps your sender reputation.

Now that I've pointed them out, the feedback links are right down there. Be honest.
